Pleasant Branch Cockerham - Corporal |
Out of Surry NC (Elkin NC area) Corporal (Reverend) Pleasant Cockerham was a Farmer and a Baptist Preacher - and a CSA Soldier. He was apparently in the Battle of Gettysburgh, ultimately under. GEN RE LEE and died in the Point Lookout Maryland POW Camp several months after the war ended (August I understand) 1865. So he was obviously sick/injured and this camp did NOT treat POW's well, with poor hygiene, poor nutrition, massive overcrowding. He never returned home to Surry County NC; died in Maryland.

John Henderson Miller - Captain |
After surrendering at Appomattox, John Henderson Miller returned home to Cotton Grove, south of Lexington, NC. There he and former slaves made the bricks in the yard, and constructed a house that still stands across from the Cotton Grove United Methodist Church on Highway 8 at the intersection with Jersey Church Road. The house was completed in 1867, when he married the former Mary Elizabeth Lindsay of Midway, NC. Their children were Mary Lindsay Miller ((Raper) John L. Miller, Hugh Marvin Miller (died in 1892 at age 15, cause unknown so far) Annie Lillian Miller (Long), and my grandfather Leroy Miller, who was only three when his father died. Captain Miller was my great grandfather. He is buried in the Miller family cemetery west of Abbotts Creek.

Azariah & Carey Byrd Denny - Private |
Before Azariah was twenty, he left family in Surry County for Virginia. In Danville, the 11th NC regiment formed - later it was numbered 21st NC. Marching with Generals Beauregard and Jackson, the 21st were frequently engaged. Azariah, with C Company, was on the field in each campaign. As a dispatch runner in the battle of Cold Harbor, Azariah is killed by marksmen. In Surry County, the state Home Guard 'drafted' brother Carey Denny who had objected to fight and worked his farm - He would serve in the same company and regiment during the seige on Petersburg. The next year, on retreat to Appomattox, Carey Byrd took fever and was left for dead. When he recovered however, he's picked up by a union officer. The man probably realized Byrd's situation, so releasing him - Carey Byrd eventually walked home. He was a farmer and Baptist minister.
